Graduation ceremony speech
The snow on Kusuya Peak, which is sung in the school song, has melted, and with each cold snap we look forward to the budding of the cherry trees. On this auspicious occasion, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on the graduation ceremony of Wakasa High School.
First of all, congratulations to the 269 third-year students on their graduation. I am sure that your school life this year has been filled with various hardships, frustrations and difficulties that you have never experienced before due to the prevention of the spread of the new type of coronavirus infection. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all of you for the unfathomable power of the young high school students, who sometimes faced themselves, sometimes inspired their peers, and showed leadership at school events, which have become fewer and fewer, to make the school life more exciting.
And to the parents, congratulations today. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and back-up for the students, despite the long hours they spent at home with anxiety due to school holidays and home study, and the times when they may have felt like their hearts were breaking. We would also like to thank you again for your cheerful and cheerful attitude, always with a smile, despite your busy schedule, and for your efforts in PTA activities over the past three years.
I am sure that everyone feels that the past two years have been a year in which common sense, social conventions and the so-called ‘normal’ things we have taken for granted up to now were noisily shattered by the outbreak of a single infectious disease. I feel that the true value of Wakasa High School itself is being tested to see how it will respond to the changing values of the times due to this paradigm shift. I believe that those of you who have studied under the school motto ‘a spirit of understanding and tolerance towards different things’ will be able to flexibly accept the changes of the times, recognise diverse values and, above all, overcome this phase with a spirit of tolerance.
From April, you will start on your own paths. The future is uncertain, the times are complex, and the ocean awaits us all. There will be times when you will feel more than ever that things are not going your way. Even so, I hope that you will not be afraid of change, and that you will continue to improve yourself through exposure to diverse values.
The key to success lies in failure.
Young people will experience many failures in their long lives. It is frustrating, painful and sad. If you overcome them with a strong will and ambition, you can become one or two times bigger.
From frustration comes wisdom.
Please raise your eyes, look firmly to the future and take another step forward on your own feet towards your new goal. First of all, I wish you all cherry blossoms of your own.
Finally, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Principal Nakamori and all the teachers and staff for their strict but warm guidance that has led them to this point. They are the treasures of the community. I hope that you will continue to give them wisdom and courage as their seniors in life, even after graduation, even though they may be lost and suffer.
I wish you all the best in your future endeavours and extend my congratulations on the occasion of your graduation. I would like to congratulate you all today.
