Fukui SDGs AWARDS 2022 Student Grand Prize Winner!

On February 26 (Sun.), Yuka Hamagishi, a second-year student in the International Exploration Course at Echizen University, won the Grand Prize for Student of the Year at this year’s awards hosted by Ninai University! She also received the Fukui Bank Award and Echizen City Award as sponsors!

While many of the SDGs are about environmentally friendly manufacturing and gender equality, Ms. Hamagishi focused on the fundamental principle of the SDGs, “leave no one behind,” and based on her concern that the elderly are being left behind in modern society, she conducted a careful interview survey on the theme of “the well-being of the elderly. The presentation was based on a qualitative analysis of the results of a careful interview survey conducted on the theme of “Happiness of the Elderly”.

In the critique, the judges commented, “I appreciated the fact that you started with a simple question you had when you saw your own great-grandmother and then went deeper and deeper on your own, listening to various people on your own, and making sense of the results! The objective was clear as an exploration, and the consistent flow of understanding the current situation, selecting methods, and analyzing for that purpose was good. The qualitative nature of the project made it very persuasive.

More than winning the award, the most important achievement was that we were able to widely communicate the results of our qualitative analysis of the narratives of the elderly to the people of the cities and towns in the prefecture as well as to the media.

Ms. Hamagishi has realized that “human connections” are important for happiness, but that the issue should not be left to the efforts of government alone. We will keep an eye on how she will deepen her exploration in the future!
